Stay insatiable. Keep writing!
Writing is a form of expression which holds unrivalled puissance to put forward one's contemplations in a manner comprehensible to the reader. It is usually expressed in the form of simple prose to [sometimes] unfathomable catharsis.
Now, as a greenhorn to this subject, one might saunter the lanes of Merriam Webster all day long (which, actually is a vital part in the process) and not get too far without one simple sine qua non: reading[¹].
What better way to know where one stands and where to start from other than reading? It can indubitably be said that writing and reading are the two sides of a coin. With profound reading, a tyro is slackened off of his original (usually obdurate) understanding of the process of writing—i.e., HIS initial plan of proceeding. And when we get a brief picture, we can go on about in an orderly and organized fashion which includes paying equal attention to grammar and punctuation. Speaking of which, grammar shouldn't be something to be left off to fend itself to. Neglecting grammar can lead to stringent ramifications and has the power to alter the perspective of the reader. With that being said, punctuation should be granted equal importance.
A basic rule of writing is that one should aim to keep it as luculent as possible. Not to mention to not fall prey to redundancy or grandiloquence.
Case in point, the word 'irk' cannot be used in place of 'pique' in certain places, notwithstanding they are synonymous to each other.
Writing is more than just grabbing the thesaurus and scouring for words. All said and done, one should keep a check on any impending logorrhea. One simply can't stake to keep it too obscure but at the same time, should also save it from prolixity. This is another major challenge for amateur writers.
And finally, just to polish your work, pithy should be taken more advantage of as a finishing touch to your work. The more tergiversate the sentences, more gives the reader the reasons to eschew your writing.
Stay insatiable. Keep writing!
